There is no better way to celebrate the High Holidays than with your family on campus.

Students, faculty and staff, parents and community members are welcome to join the High-Holidays services and programs of Mason Hillel, led by the cantorial soloist Janet Christensen.

Erev Rosh Hashanah short service, program and light meal: Sept. 29 at 6:30 PM

Rosh Hashanah Day service and refreshments: Sept. 30 at 10 AM

Kol Nidre short service and program: Oct. 8 at 6:30 PM

* Yom Kipur Day service: Oct. 9 at 10 AM

Yom Kipur Ne’ila service + break the fast light dinner, Oct 9 at 6:30 PM

Location: All services would take place in “George’s”, which is located on the third floor of the “Johnson Center”.

Recommended parking at the “Pond Deck Parking Lot”. Parking validations (5) for services can be bought for $12.

There is no required payment to attend the service; however, we ask that community members consider making a contribution of $360 for a family/ $180 for an individual (sliding scale, depending on financial means) in order to help cover the costs for yourself and the student body.

Janet Christensen is a cantorial soloist born and raised in Northern Virginia. Currently she leads services on Saturday mornings at Temple B’nai Shalom in Fairfax Station. She has guest performed with other Jewish artists such as Rick Recht and Beth Schafer. Her teachers and mentors include Cantor Rosalie Boxt, Robyn Helzner, and Rabbi Amy Perlin. Janet graduated from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids MI, with a Bachelors of Music and continued on for a Masters in Music at Boston University, where she was very active in BU Hillel leading Reform Friday night services. She was the founder of Joco Jobim, a Grand Rapids Bossa Nova ensemble and Klezmatics, a Klezmer trio based in Grand Rapids. Janet Christensen is also a notable composer and arranger. Most recently in 2015 the Detroit Chamber Winds, premiered Ocho Kandelikas, a Spanish Hannukah holiday brass quintet piece.

Janet has strong ties to George Mason as both of her parents have been professors at George Mason.
